David Charles Black

June 19, 1931-July 14, 2021

The funeral service for David Charles Black, 90, of Utica will be held at 11am on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at the Utica Church of Christ, 115 N. Central Ave., Utica with David Smith and Doug Swan officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Bell Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8pm on Monday, July 19, 2021 at the Utica Church of Christ.

David entered this world June 19, 1931 and departed on July 14, 2021. The youngest of four boys, he was born to the late Clyde Ronald and Mary Margaret (Tulloss) Black in Mt. Vernon. David attended Columbia School and graduated from Mt. Vernon High in 1950. He fondly remembered his boyhood days growing up on the farm.

In 1951 he and two friends enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and it was off to Parris Island, SC for basic training. During the next three years he was stationed several places in the States, along with serving overseas in Japan, Korea and Puerto Rico. He served on the heavy cruiser, Bremerton off the coast of Korea. Returning home from his tour of duty, he was honorably discharged from Camp Lejeune, NC with the rank of PFC. David was always very patriotic and proud to say "Semper Fi" or "Once a Marine, Always a Marine".

When he returned home, he was employed at Pittsburgh Plate Glass in Mt. Vernon. Following that he worked a variety of jobs: Insurance, Auto Salesman and finally Auto Glass Installation. Recreation included fishing at Lake Erie and mushroom hunting in Ohio and Michigan. Later years found him and Jo Ellyn traveling the U.S. and the world with Freedom Years. He enjoyed his trip with Honor Flight.

In 1954, he married Jo Ellyn Johnson from Utica and together they had two sons, David Gregory (Tami) and Phillip Daniel (Olivia) who survive.

Also surviving are two grandchildren, Adam (Mandy), Desire é and two great-granddaughters, Iris Lynn and Purity Kang Mi, sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen and JoAnn; brother-in-law, Kip Johnson; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceding him in death besides his parents are three brothers, Kenneth, Roger and wife, Marcene, Thomas and infant sister; also sister-in-law, Viola Johnson, daughter-in-law, Kang Mi Black and friend, Faye Ann Spray.

David was a member of the Utica Church of Christ; life member of Amvets Memorial Post 95; life member of V.F.W. Post 4027; Colonial City Ohio Lodge 25 Loyal Order of Moose, Mt. Vernon and American Legion Post 0092 Utica, Ohio.
