January 31, 1953 - November 20, 2018
A funeral service for Roger L. Buchanan, 65, of Mt. Vernon, will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 24, 2018 at Utica Church of Christ, 115 N. Central Ave, Utica with Pastor Sheila Kent officiating. Burial will follow in South Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call Friday, November 23, 2018, 4:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Law-Baker Funeral Home, 34 N. Main St., Utica. Roger was not a "suit & tie" person, but rather a self-proclaimed old hippie. Therefore, please feel free to dress casual.
Roger passed away at his residence surrounded by family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born January 31, 1953, in Mount Vernon to the late Robert L. and Carmen L. (Starling) Buchanan.
He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Carolyn A. (Lang) Buchanan of Mt. Vernon whom he married July 15, 1972; sons and daughters-in-law, Travis and Lisa Buchanan of Dry Fork, VA, Preston and Melanie Buchanan of Danville, VA; daughter and son-in-law, Shelby and John Reed of Heath; grandchildren, Breanne, Marcus, Taylor, Lilly, Hannah, Tyler, Emma, Ethan, Savannah, Sierra, Lainey, and Vincent; brother and sister-in-law, Corey and Christy Buchanan of Huber Heights.
Roger was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Chloe Buchanan.
Roger was raised in Utica and lived most of his adult life there. Roger didn't know a stranger and he loved to volunteer his time to his community. In the mid-70s, he joined the Utica EMS where he was active for 6 years. In the late 90s Roger joined the Utica Volunteer Fire Department and was an active member for 19 years. After his retirement, he still enjoyed helping with the Fire Department's annual Homecoming Cake Auction.
From the mid 70s through the early 80s Roger was a member of the Utica Area Jaycees. He held various offices including President in 1982-83. In 1984, work took Roger to Huber Heights, OH where he joined the Huber Heights Jaycees. After holding various offices, Roger became President in 1987. He went on to serve as District E-3 Director in 1988-89 for the Ohio Jaycees. One of Roger's proudest Jaycee moments was when he became a United States Jaycees Ambassador in 1989. This is the highest award bestowed by the United States Jaycees and is earned for making "outstanding contributions to the Jaycee movement".
Roger not only loved volunteering, but also enjoyed detailing vehicles, fishing, hunting for shark teeth on Florida's beaches, collecting toys and hats, and riding his beloved motorcycle. His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren.
